Subject: Re: Gypsum applications

We spread thousands of tons of gypsum each year. We use 3020 New Leader spreader boxes most of the time. The ground wallboard is much lighter than mined gypsum and sometimes causes trouble in a 3020. The quality of grinding and the amount of paper or fiberglass affects this a bunch. Rates are usually between 1 and 3 tons/acre. Wallboard gyp is often advertised as 96% gypsum. Mined gyp can vary from more than 95% to less than 50%. It is one of the few ways to leach salt out of an almond orchard (ripping will disturb the roots). It will also make a big difference in the ability of a very hard alfalfa field to take water. The use of gypsum is very common in California's Southern San Joaquin Valley.
