Thud, it makes perfect sense to me what you want to do. I had a look at a midnite solar brochure for one of their charge controllers and there is no mention of maximum array wattage, just maximum voltage. I believe the battery charging controllers take what they need until they reach their maximum charging amperage, max solar output, or the battery approaches full.

Having said that, I would split the system and buy two charge controllers. You are talking a fairly serious off-grid system and another charge controller won’t break the bank while giving you some redundancy.

What are you thinking of running off grid?
