Subject: Re: how many pods on a soybean plant is normal

The size of the bean varies too much to forecast a yield by pod and bean count. 50 pods per plant and 3 beans to the pod makes 150 beans to the plant. If there was 150,000 plants to the acre that would be 22.5 million beans to the acre. If they were 3200 to the pound that would be 7000 pounds of beans per acre or 117 bushel beans. Quite optimistic most places. On the other hand if there were 30 pods per plant and 3 beans to the pod that's 90 per plant, and 100,000 plants to the acre that's 9 million beans to the acres. If 3200 beans to the pound that.s 2812 pounds of beans or 47 bushel beans, more likely, I'd say.

What's normal depends on where you are, what the nutrients and bugs in your soil are, what variety of bean, and what the year was like. On my farm 49 is the best I've done, the neighbors did 35 last year while I did 47 while 20 miles away 70 was common. I've rented the place out to a tenant who gave up on beans and is continuous corn with strip till.
