Galahad, Alberta | Yeah, we got 3.4" over the weekend and I went out on Sunday after it had quit, and found pods split open, just as you described. If the pod was still green, and had some elasticity, the peas would swell, but not break the pod. If the peas had started to dry a bit and shrink, they wouldn't get big enough to break the pod. But, if they were at the stage that you described, they split the pod open. Worse still, I found a few pods that didn't split, but the peas inside had swelled enough to split their seed coat, so the sample is going to look crappy, probably feed peas now.
We are probably still two weeks from harvest, and a few days from desiccating
