Subject: Corn for silage using a grain drill...

EC MN - Hour North of 'The Cities'
Reading the thread over in Machinery Talk discussing 20" rows for corn and how to utilize populations, spacing, and genetics got me thinking...

If one was able to plant corn with a grain drill on 7.5" spacing and harvest it with a Kemper head, what populations would be possible and still have good stalk strength? Would there be a better profit considering higher fertilizer and seed costs if tonnage could be increased dramatically on the same acre?

The biggest challenges that I see would be available moisture, herbicide application, and fertility other than a banded rate.

A good pre and maybe a wide boom or tram lines would work in this scenario to accomplish good weed control.

Fertility on a banded rate may be accomplished with liquid fertilizers, or a simple dry broadcast would get one by if preplant is suitable for a certain soil.

Any thoughts or has anybody seen this practiced before? I would think with RTK and Kemper heads, this might become reality someday.
