Subject: populations

SW MN and Gold Canyon AZ
I remember taking a tour at Stine the year before RR beans came out. We were looking a soybean field in august from the road. Harry had us all take a guess what the population was. It looked like a normal field from the road. We walked out there and I was totally amazed. The population was 30,000 !!
The reasoning behind planting so thin was to maximize the amout of seed coming back from South america and to get the most bags that fall from a set amount of seed. Needless to say they went 40 bu/acre,that from a 1.4 maturity bean planted in central IA. We had more RR seed to sell that year than anyone else. That convinced me I was planting WAY to thick. The stems were sickle busters thats for sure!!
