When you bought that CD you didn't own the program. The only thing you own when you bought a computer or smartphone is the box it's in and a license to use the software. You can also buy a tool to program your tpms. It's not dealer only.
Yes, you are correct. I would not own it. But, the transfer of money for the use of it was single transaction, then use of product until end of life. Now the business model is shifting toward what I suggested earlier, (monthly subscription) . You are constantly paying the mfg for use of the software,as they hold it hostage until you pay them to come out and reflash it for you. The TPMS reference was to show how they make a simple do it yourself job, into a pay us (or tool company) to make it happen. This is all a bout constant cash flow. Instead of coming out with the best product, that sells the most,they make a product that pays them the most.
EDIT: Also If I had a problem with my CD program, I could just remove it from my pc, reboot the pc on my own, then re-install it on my pc. I didnt have to call microsoft and get premission to reflash my computer.
