| Yes, I know. A clean cut always takes less power, but those stalks can be brutal on pretty much anything. The NH row heads break up the top of the stubble somewhat, too, they just do it differently. Back in the day before we did much cover cropping and double cropping, it was common to see last year's silage stubble still standing in the field at harvest time. We'd have 2 sets of stalks. Now with heavy double cropping most of the stubble is run down by the no-till drill, and by next year's harvest it's decomposed without a trace. Still, I have toyed with the idea of pulling a roller behind the wagon to flatten it all while chopping, especially when we cut high. | |
