Subject: RE: Rawson zone-till (triple coulter)

Dodge County, WI
We apply all the product at the time of planting. No sidedressing. I don't think there is a chance you could get a rawson setup on that planter. Remember, you would be doing some tillage with the planter. It will pull harder, and it needs to be built heavier. We have a 6row 30" planter and used to pull it with a CIH1896 (115hp?) and that wasn't enough on hills and damp conditions. Now we have a CIH 7120, which is plenty. If you can't use your current planter, now you are talking about buying new iron and at this point it might be getting a little out of hand for you. If it's not for example, there is a farmer up here who runs a 36row 20" setup on a Wil-Rich toolbar mounted on tracks with multiple tanks for all his seed, 28, and fertilizer. He pulls it with a STX425. He was applying his stuff with one or two wave coulters only, which is NOT the rawson system, but we used to do it that way, and it also was fine. I don't think this setup is cheap. He had to get the toolbar, which is a monster, and then buy all the row units, with the assorted other hardware, pumps, etc... and put it all together. Out of hand, but effective. If you got the money to spend, it's the cadillac planter for this kind of thing.

As for the post about dry conditions being the only place the coulters work.. If the ground is working up with coulters in wet chunks, you shouldn't be out in the field. Otherwise, you would be surprised at how much seed you could smear in spots if you have to. Remember, the ground is undisturbed, with roots and trash sort of "holding together" the soil. I have found that we can get our stuff planted earlier, and have a great stand, with one pass in the spring. Because we don't ever till our fields, we try to take care not to go out in questionable conditions. However, you would need to get a different planter. You may have stopped reading awhile ago.
