Eric,
If you have an alfalfa/grass seed attachment it's very close to what an 8lb rate would be for alfalfa. On my JD1560 drill, which i believe is the same, that's right aroung "4". Or you can use the grain box and it's also right around "4 or 5"- about the lowest setting you can use. Settings this tight can vary from drill to drill- even same make and model. Use this only as a guide to get started. I'd put in a known amount and plant a known acerage to really get a decent idea where your drill will be at.
