SC Wisconsin | I was always under the impression that the corn needed to be cracked. A local farmer/feeder bought a closed down feed mill and reopened it, asksd me to try his starter but i was skeptical because he used whole corn in it. My calves have never gone after the starter as well as they do with the whole corn. If you watch the calf eat starter, they will chew it and break those kernels open. Why pay to have the corn cracked when the cattle will do it for you? Looking through their manure youll be hard pressed to find a whole kernel. In my humble opinion, the chewing will help buffer the gut some as well so that's an added benefit.
To the OP, i like some whole oats in there as well. You dont give a location, but even if you are in Canada that 750 per ton is way too high. I pay right around 360 per ton in bulk for an 18 rum starter | |
