greid01 - 1/23/2020 08:46 Wondering if people are making their own calf starter. We milk 180 cows and raise all bull and heifer calves. Our 18% pellet calf starter just went up to $750/t and I am looking to cut some costs without cutting performance. We have whole corn and feed corn distillers with canola meal to the cows. Not sure if I could get away without a pellet since calves don't like fines. Any ideas?

Two comments from past experience:  1.  If you are able to mix in (horizontal ribbon mixer) 100 lbs/ton straight real molasses you definitely won't have to worry about pellets and the fines will not be a problem.  2.  The best calf starters include a significant amount of milk protein in the protein source.  Milk replacer would work but I think dry whey is cheaper.
