Subject: Our observations 16 row equip

Dalhart Texas

The smoother the field the better. So a good finish plow and crumble help in our sand hills. Live & die by matched rows. Use the exact same tractor to plant and pull cultivator. Have your AB lines set up way way in advance. If you have a front hitch, shallow listing of traffic rows can help secure future traffic tighter in established rows. No end rows, no curved rows if at all possible. Just my opinion, you're way better off turning around on native grass, alfalfa or even wheat cover crop than trying to cultivate end rows.  Even passes always go north, odd passes always go south. Never plant over 4.5 mph. Planter & tractor drift is highly noticeable over those speeds. Even with a awesome base station and zero tree interference. Have a written plan and schedule from plow dates up thru side dress waste high dates and stick to them. Irrigation should have a detailed schedule also (if you are in a non rain environment).

If you have fallow organic ground, never let a weed get more then 4" tall.
Just my humble opinions. Our area is 100% diff than rest of country, so may not work there.
