NW Illinois Stephenson county | Another kind of creepy. I had a giant hackberry tree 10 feet away from the house on the west side. The tree decided to split vertically with one half headed directly for the house There was a gap of 8 inches 10 feet up. When the temperature went below zero and the wind blew hard the tree gave off a loud squeaking moaning sound. I put up with it a couple of years until I convinced a neighbor to climb up and tie a cable on so he could cut it down. My uncle Floyd chewed me out for cutting down that nice tree until I explained the reason it was cut down. Most anything but an old stringy hackberry would have fell into the house when the split started to develop. |
