scmn
We have a 25kw and had no problem with it powering everything Monday evening (lights, furnace, multiple livestock drinkers, well, stove, etc.) The countryside was pretty dark for a while with no yard lights for miles.

One thing to look at installing is a power return signal light that is ahead of the the transfer switch so that you know when the power returns to your place. With the new electronic meters you can always go out and see if the meter is powered up, but when the weather is miserable and you have to get bundled up to go check it, a simple light on the transfer switch is easily visible from the house and/or shop is a lot nicer to glance at going out to the pole to check (a colored LED light is easy to see in daylight.) At night you can see if the neighbors yard light comes on, but during the day or low visibility (blowing snow, fog, blizzard, etc) you can not tell if the power is restored without going to the pole to check. A 15A breaker after the meter and ahead of the transfer switch that feeds a colored LED light is simple to have installed and would pay back pretty quick if you left the generator run a couple extra couple hours because you did not know power was restored. I figure it takes us 2-2.5 gal/hour of diesel to run the generator.
