Subject: RE: Large Scale Alfalfa Seeding

I didn’t read through the replies. I seed 500-600ac of alfalfa each spring.

I seed with my 50’ air drill with the shanks out of the ground or just scraping the ground. Basically broadcast the seed. Seed about 8mph. The packers in the drill follow, but I always roll afterwards to complete the job.

I seed 7lbs/ac and seed two passes perpendicular to each other for full coverage (drill is on 10” spacing). I could go to 5lbs/Ac on each pass (10lbs total) but like to play it safe.

Work the ground in the fall of course (I disc twice with Wishek and couple of McFarlane 16bar harrow passes so it is seedbed ready in the spring).

Won’t get a good alfalfa stand here with no-till.
