West Central MN | We bought a DJI 3 when it came out, cost about $1800 at the time. My nephew had graduated from precision ag U of M so we were ready to rock. He took it up and flew around a little and landed it, he then proceeded to take it for a little futher of a test flight. Well he took it out about 1/8 of a mile with everything clear in all directions, I guess at that point the mother board had a fluke and fried out. It tilted a little and proceeded to accelerate to maximum speed and hurtle through the sky in a sweeping curve back toward the farmsite, all this time none of the controls he was trying to manipulate were having any effect. We were thinking of diving behind anything solid at that point but we were mostly paralyzed with either fear or disbelief so we all just stood there with our fingers up you know where except for my nephew who was frantically pushing last ditch buttons attempting to get any response from the oversize mosquito. No such luck, like an $1800 Jap zero it wide open kamikazied into the lee side of the roof of a small chemical shed and ricocheted uncontrollably full bore into the side of our wet holding bin. At that point it self destructed like a white hand grenade into about 50 bite sized pieces. Per hour we figured it would have been cheaper to rent a private helicopter but the credit card transaction already was processed so we couldnt back out of this deal. Live and learn I guess. | |
