Subject: RE: Looking at corn heads, Drago GT or Capello?

I have an S67 with an AGCO head and I have rented a Case 7230 with a Gerringhoff Northstar the last two years.

I have had nothing but bad luck with Gerringhoff and I don't think you could give me one. That being said, I know a farmer (bsf on here) who runs two Gerringhoffs on S9's and he loves them. To each their own I guess.

I ran a Deere S770 with a Capello on it this year (custom harvester who helped us finish let me run it a bit). I LOVE how gently it lifts down corn compared to any other head I have used. It is crazy. There is no other head like it. However, I did notice trash piling in front of the feederhouse some on it. Between that experience and hearing that the same neighbor who runs Gerringhoffs demoed some Capellos a few years ago and didn't even make it to the end of the pass before they turned around and unhooked due to feeding problems, well, I'm not sure I would go that route with a Gleaner.

I demoed a Case 7250 with a Drago GT non chopping head this year for a few hours. It also had some trash piling in the center but I think it would not have been as bad if I set the cams on the deck plates so they could not come as close together. It seemed like a decent head but again, I would like to see how it feeds with a Gleaner before I bought one.

So what is my pick after running all three of those heads? Well, I'm not as much of an AGCO fan anymore but you might be surprised to know that my pick for a Gleaner is a 3000 series Hugger. Put Calmer deck plates on it to make the head shelling competitive with the other heads and roll on. Those other heads are not going to give you a good ROI in my opinion.

If I were forced to pick another head though...uhhhg. I would hate to choose. I want to love Gerringhoff since it works well for the farmer I know but I just can't based on my experiences with it over two years. I feel trash piling in front of the feederhouse is such a concern on the Gleaner that I really would hate to buy a Capello or a Drago GT without testing them first or at least riding with someone who has them on an S series Gleaner. If the Capello fed well in a demo then I would probably choose that just because I'm not convinced of the value of the complexity of the Drago GT and I could not see huge differences in head shelling in the conditions I was in and the Drago is a fair amount more expensive than the Capello and I just love how the Capello gently lifts corn if it's down.

My 2 cents.
