I read your description of some of the other problems - besides the axle - and I am now having some bad Windstar flashbacks. If that transmission hasn't been repaired recently it's only a matter of a few thousand miles and you will be dropping minimum $2500 in that tranny. The band breaks in them and then it won't shift out of 1st gear until you rebuild it. Not a job for the faint of heart because it all has to come out the bottom. Unless you have a lift you will need someone to do repair it. Those vans are notorious for their bad transmissions (along with the Check Engine lights).
