| I have been searching for information about this same issue. I have a 1999 Ford Windstar with 98,000 miles. We purchases the Van used about 4 years ago, knowing that it may have a few issues...check engine light (MAF sensor), locks don't always work correctly, a slight "jolt" when shiftng from 1st to 2nd gear (automatic) once in awhile...I could live with these because of the shape of the interior and exterior. Then 2 days ago, I notice a "Kerchunk" when backing up, and my wife tells we she has noticed in the same time frame that the when she makes a turn, it sounds like the tires are squeeling. I checked the tire pressure- all fine, check the power steering fluid-fine, take it for a short ride...and I hear the same noise along with a nasty sound when I pull into the driveway. Unknowing what I was about to findout- I drove the van to a service shop- the back end seemed like it was floating on it's own. I left it for them to inspect. I got a call a few hours later- bad news, the rear axle had snapped. The mechanic actually asked his boss if he was trying to kill him, as he took it out for a test drive and could not believe what he was experiencing. I can only assume that they did not put it on a lift and inspect before driving it as I was fully forthcoming on what I had experienced.
I am waiting on a call tomorrow on the cost of the parts and labor to repair- I will prefer getting a new axle from the dealer, but I am really hesitant- what else?
Has anyone recieved any "good" info back from Ford about this issue? | |
