Great question, and I have never understood. I wondered if they are pneumatic tires filled with something that solidifies so they will never go flat. I see that a lot on forklifts but I don’t really honestly know what it means.

Mostly I just look at them and make sure the tires look big enough that they won’t get stuck as easily in a gravel yard.

I think the smaller the tire on a forklift the lighter they can be relative to their lift capacity because the smaller the tire the further forward the axle can be. This basically means that larger tired forklifts are usually a fair amount more expensive (for a given lift capacity).
