Blooming where I am planted! | Talk to someone who's 90, like my aunt, and you'll learn a lot. Her view is that back in the day, you went to the doctor, paid the bill on your way out, and that was that. She had no insurance and paid her bills in full the little bit she went. Plus, there wasn't all this technology that required all the administrative costs and high initial and upkeep costs. Plus, people weren't sue-happy like they are nowadays. Add to the fact that people didn't know as much, so died because it wasn't known what they had or how to treat it.
My aunt now carries Medicare and Blue Cross. Two days ago she broke her hip and had surgery yesterday to put all manner of pins and screws in it to put it back together. That will be a pretty penny that insurance will pay for. Considering that she wasn't on any medicine, her cholesterol, blood pressure, and etc. are totally normal, she was in pretty good shape before then, other than having suffered a major stroke about 4 years ago. |
