Subject: RE: 5x5 vs 5x6 balers

I bought a Vermeer 665 rancher. It pretty heavy built yet simple to work on. It's a 5x5.5 and I really thought that it not being a 5x6 I would regret it. But I make bales 66 inches and as tight as the baler will do it. Comes out to a pretty heavy bale. Best thing is I bought it used with about 2k bales on it, maybe less, for 11k. With twine and netwrap you can't go wrong. It doesn't have a wide pickup but I just make my windrows as wide as the pickup and with the gathering wheels no problem. And a few less moving parts too. Considering a 605M or newer it 567 or newer with that low of a bale count would have been atleast double in price I don't feel as if I am missing much. I even baled up about 50 bales of wet hay with it and even a few at 66inches before I realized just how wet the hay was. No issues what so ever so I could probably even bale wet hay with it.

And it eats hay, if you can drive over it, it will bale it.

Oh and the 5x5.5 bales actually fit better/perfect on my 40 foot trailer. 14 on bottom row with ramps in the up position is a good tight fit. With 5x6s it didn't work out as well.
