Western illinois
Appreciate the extensive review. I have a Geringhoff Northstar and just started throwing chains this year. I feel my problems were enhanced by small ‘nubbin’ ears on down stalks that wedged between the chain and snout occasionally. I also think I’m due for gathering chains as the tension seems weaker than it should be. I went to a combine clinic and they said to replace chains if they start coming off because they’re stretched. If you look under the idler assembly, there is a notch in the frame. I believe they said you should be able to get two fingers in that notch with the chain attached. If you can’t, the chain has stretched beyond it’s useful life. Mine is a 2012 model with original chains, so it’s probably time. I really like the head, until corn goes down. There was a thread awhile back about down corn and heads. I watched a video of a Maya head in down corn. It was very impressive. I had never heard of Maya before. If my corn was flat, I’d try to get my hands on one.
