Fletcher, OH | We have a 965C with the C-18 as a scraper tractor pulling two 17 yard Eject pans. Currently has 2600 hours.
The hydraulic remotes are very problematic. The solenoid coils fail routinely. If the Husco controller fails(we've had several) it's $1200(one on every remote). Must be programmed at the dealer. We couldn't get much life from the 3/4" poppet couplers. They were good for the first 1200 hours, then rebuild. Finally gave up on them and went to direct o ring face seal connections. Scraper use is hard on them.
The engine fan is direct coupled, no clutch. The fan exploded at about 1800 hours. Luckily no damage to the radiator. Plastic fan.
Several engine oil leaks which we fixed ourselves including the head gasket and spacer plate gasket. Be sure if doing these gaskets to place a fine ribbon of anaerobic gasket maker between the push rod cavities and exterior edge, both sides of the gaskets. This was where ours leaked.
The hood plastic is marginal. Several fasteners broken.
Cab plastic marginal quality. Cab door leaks air from pressurizer fan. The steering wheel tilt cylinder failed already.
Watch the controller display hitting the side window and breaking the scroll knob off. We had ours repaired by Ag Electronics. If I were to repair again, I would mount the screen to the monitor bar and have Ag Electronics make a custom cable. Connecting the screen to the armrest.
The a/c compressor clutch armature spot welds broke this fall allowing the coil to rotate within the pulley shearing off the wire. When the wire shorted, it arced a connection at the HVAC controller(climate control). This took most of a full day to diagnose. Luckily it didn't fry the controller. The fine engineers put a 40 fuse on the a/c circuit, but should have put a smaller fuse for the clutch. I was able to change out only the armature with a take off coil from a Freightliner thus avoiding a refrigerant dump and recharge. Plugging and un-plugging the controller fixed the arced connection.
The transmission is crude not having skip shift or automatic downshift like Deere.
Transmission belly pan must be dropped to change the transmission or hydraulic filter. PITA!
Engine belly pan fills with dirt from the tires. Really needs tire shields by the engine. We're running 1100R46LSW singles.
Oh, and one of the relays on top of the starters(yeah two starters) failed resulting in only one starter working. Fun to diagnose at 22*F. Changed the second relay preventatively.
I talked the owners into this unit after we trashed three sets of tracks on an 865C in less than 2000 hours. The Cat engine, transmission, and axles were appealing.
We also have a JD 9510R on a 21 yd and 18 yd Deere pans. Fall 2017 the torsional damper tore out violently causing the driveshaft to damage 9 hydraulic lines, two pumps, chassis harness, and heater hoses. That repair was over $17K. Engine mis-alignment was the cause. Three EGR coolers on that one so far. Still have phantom engine derate codes for the DPF. Dealer hasn't been able to diagnose. Did the fan drive repair this spring as recommended by NAT. Wasn't bad. Have been told by ownership not to worry about the water pump bearings. Crossing my fingers!
The JD 9520 ahead of it broke something in an axle. The oil being common to the transmission trashed the tranny. It was still under warranty. Deere ate $100K. We ate $50K.
I hate farm tractors on scrapers!
