" How common was this method of filling silo, of having somebody packing and distributing the whole time? Was that just a "here" thing?"

Jonathan, Your question made me remember how my father had me or my older sister be inside of the 10 X 30 concrete block silo while it was being filled in the 1960's. He had a 3 or 4 foot length of stove pipe hung from the end of the filler spout in the top of silo. A rope was attached to the short pipe. It was our job to stand in the bottom of the silo next to the wall and keep the stream of silage directed ( kind of) near the wall and not let it make a cone in the center. We covered ourselves with a "poncho" dad made from a 100 pound paper fertilizer bag. Rope was of course shortened as the silo filled. Walked round and round on the silage packing it next to the wall. Ahh, the good old days !!
