Gary explained true ndvi very well. What you do have is still useful as kind of a false ndvi. Just know it is not a true ndvi. In GK we often use color naip imagery that often does not have the nir band, you use a single band. You can get similar results in certain cases. There are thousands of ways to use different bands to show different results.
