North of London | I am surprised to see so many different ways to do the same thing.
I think much has to do with a) the size of the bales and b) the size of the wagon rack.
Our wagons were 4x8 plywood so 8 foot wide and 16 long.
We always stacked 4 cross wise and 1 length wise and then 5 layers high then topped it with 4 cross wise and if everything was going well you could add 2 or 3 lengthwise on the 7th layer.

Sidehills were always a challenge especially when the wheels found the ground hog hole and the kid on the tractor was not paying attention to slow down.
