This is how I learned.

That looks like what I remember too. In lighter weight crops, we could have the 6th layer have four bales length wise and a 3 bale 7th layer. I think we needed to start the next stack to get the bales to that 7th layer.

Then it depended how long the rack was whether we also built a "leanto" at the front because there was about 2ft of rack left.

This is all 40 years ago in my memory so I'm probably off a bit.
