We used the 8 hook bale sling deal to put bales in the barn, so 3 across would not work, and would be too long to fit on the hay rack anyhow.

I often stacked 2 bales across with one lengthwise down the middle. The bale spears would pick up 10 at a time then.

Did that 3 high. Or two high in heavy bales.

Then 2 layers of just 2 across above that.

If it was light or needed to finish a field I’d do one across the top. This had to be rearranged into a 2x4 pattern for the bale spears to pick up once in the barn.

As fast as dad would drive across the fields and over washboards, these patterns held together on the rack. Light hay or straw was harder to pack well, it jostled around more because it was light and slippery compared to heavy bales.
