Subject: RE: New views of the WIU Organic Research Farm

Our intention was to plant this field to corn but there was still standing water in the north end when we decided it was go time for planting corn (6/9 and 6/11) so we skipped over this field. We mowed off the peas and weeds about a week later and then decided to rotavate and plant beans on 7/2, a last minute decision after planting most of our beans on 7/1.

This field has historically had high weed pressure so the low weed pressure was a surprise. The late planting date and lack of rain after planting were probably the most important factors but the large amount of digesting residue and aggressive rotary hoeing probably also contributed to the low weed pressure.
