We’ve been tweaking our mix for the last several years. In the fall of 2017 we arrived at that blend and I’m finally happy with it. We always fought with hard ground in the spring but that small amount of tillage radish really seems to help.
I would add vetch too if I could get a type with a guarantee of no hard seed but we produce too much certified seed to risk it otherwise.
We have settled into double cropping BMR sorghum Sudan mixed half and half with OP corn (based on seed count not weight) after barley. That gets a heavy dose of manure before planting and then we notill the rye mix into it after harvest, usually around sept 10. We generally plant soybeans into the cover around May 30 and then crimp 3 days later. We use a JD 1590 on 7.5” spacing. Shoot for 200,000 sds/ac | |
