Are you hooking into their main or running a line to an outbuilding or something? If hooking into the main or their service(I don't know how your rural water does it) they may have requirements on how it is connected. I don't allow hose barb connections to connect to the water system I'm in charge of. Must be brass compression fittings for hooking into my system. I'd check with your rural water supplier to see if they require something specific but I'd go with a brass compression fitting if it was me.
