Subject: Cement

Woodham, Ontario
We use something completely different. Ours sit on cement strips with coarse gravel between the strips. The strips are wide enough that the calves stay on the cement. We use a generous amount of straw for bedding. The reason we went with cement is because with our clay soils, even a gravel base will saturate. Now we can easily clean ALL manure after each calf and stop any disease from spreading. We usually clean the bedding with a payloader and/or skidsteer. Having strips instead of a huge single slab allows rainwater to drain.
