Something is up with my math, pretty sure geometrically hexagons should give optimal packing.

Edit: never mind. Equilateral triangles would be optimal. 12” on a side would mean 6” rows with 20 3/4” spacing in the row, 57,580 population.

Edit 2: population was off. Here are correct figures for equilateral triangles:

10”: 72,428
11”: 59,850
12”: 50,292
13”: 42,841
14”: 36,939
15”: 32,181
16”: 28,289
