I've had problems with references whether they were ones I find myself or coming from the prospect. Last time I hired a guy one reference who gave me a very good reference reversed himself about a month later. I asked him why he hadn't given me a truthful response before I hired the guy and he said, well it worried him to maybe cost somebody a job.
