First thing to do is revise your interview and hiring practices.  To confirm that someone is knowledgeable in specific areas can be confirmed by simply asking a few technical questions about equipment, crops and any other area's you feel are relevant to you operation.  

It does not take too long to cut through the BS if you have done your homework and are prepared when you do the interview.
