Very southern Mn | We are still looking for a large frame 2 track tractor. Not in a big hurry as we don’t need till Late fall. We have a JD 9530t which has been a good tractor that we bought new which is getting some hrs on but not excessive which we will keep. We have leased a Challenger 865e which they are finally getting the gremlins out of. Most of problems have been turbo related. I would like a dedicated tile plow tractor for at least another year until 865e goes back and than that would replace 865E. So thoughts are to try and find something this summer. We will use all the hrs up on the lease so that is not a issue. We are looking for a JD 9560RT or a low hr 9530t which younger generation would prefer or a 865 with a cat engine which would be a 865c or older but want fairly low hrs which are getting harder to find. I guess we have always had Deere’s and 865E has been first Cat or Challenger so I have no experience with older ones. Really don’t want a used v12 as in the E series, looks like it could be expensive to keep running when they get some hrs. I guess questions are power, will 865C pull with a 865E? Are reaction arms worse on any series? Are the cabs a lot louder on the C’s or B’s? Any other shortfalls between series? Will 9560rt significantly out pull a 9530t? Our 9530 has never been chipped and pulls pretty close to Current 865E or a lot closer than I thought so just wondering what other experiences are out there. I think the older 865’s are probably more dependable than any but Deere’s cab and interchangeability with autosteer components are a big plus for us but head gasket and water pump drive repairs scare me. I know most here on farm still prefer running the Deere because it is quieter and controls seem more comfortable. We have no interest in a 4 track system, any color as we have got along very well with the 2 track. Just hoping for some general thoughts or experiences from people that have had the different series of tractors and if they thought they went forwards or backwards with updating. It is really confusing trying to purchase anything with newer models having more problems than old. Just thinking aloud, I wonder if emissions engines have really saved much pollution with all the extra weight and repair and mfg of components that in end if it is much of a gain even for environment. Seems like we have taken giant step backwards. Edited by jdironman 5/24/2019 05:58

SW. IOWA | ? Why are you against a 4 track system? Just curious.

| Same question here. Just because two tracks have served you well, doesn’t mean should close your mind to a quad. I’d love the quads advantages regarding tracking around curves and ability to avoid sucking itself further into a wet hole. And none of the fore and aft rocking back and forth. Id sure do my best to check a quad on a trial basis or short term lease/rental. I’d bet a good steak supper you’d have a different opinion afterwards. Sorry, as you know it’s the NAT way to go a completely different direction from what the OP always asks! | |||

East Central Indiana | Only thing I can speak of is cab noise in the challengers. We demoed a 765C before we bought our 765D. And there is no way I would have sat in a 765 a b or c all day long. It screamed inside the cab. No way to carry on a phone conversation and you had to blast the radio just to try and drowned out the noise. After the demo I told dad I loved the power and ride in the field but there was no way I was buying one unless it was a D series.

Very southern Mn | Just like simple system, have red friends that have spent a lot of money on undercarriage and tracks, definitely don’t want a green one, they are too heavy, too loud, too expensive and take a lot of power to run tracks, demoed one of those, glad to see it go back. We have really gotten along really well with our two track system , know there are disadvantages but we have been pretty happy. I am really leaning to a 865c but wondering how loud the cab is, I know the 865e’s cab is louder than 9530’s and would hate for a 865c’s to be louder yet. If Challenger had same cab as Deere it would be easy choice. Our fields are all pretty square so that might be a issue for others, not here Another off topic question Boone, did you have all your meetings? Fighting this crop has kind of overshadowed things. I wanted to make one of them. Edited by jdironman 5/24/2019 15:11

Missouri river bottom south of Sioux City, IA | Ran the Challenger 865c for a while but five years ago I was looking at the JD quad but they did not offer them in tracks set out to 120 centers. Looked at the Case quad but was not interested in switching to that brand at that time. I ended up trading the Challenger for a JD 9560RT. Saw no difference in power between the two. The JD ride was not as good as the Challenger but everything else in the cab was much better. Way less nose, better brakes and easer shifting. I pull scrapers with the big tractors and the 2 tracks have an issue with turning under load in soft ground. They are also extremely rough riding in a scraper application, like you mention “the fore and aft rocking back and forth”. The older you get the more you want a smooth ride and less cab noise. Got a 9520RX this spring on rental as JD offered 120 inches track spacing on their wide under carriage in 2018. I got to say it’s the quietest cab I have ever been in. Ride is good also but I have not had it on the scraper yet. The only negative is it fuel consumption. It is about 6 gallon per hour more than the JD9560RT under heavy load. Wondered why the put a 400 gallon fuel tank on it. Tom N. (JD 9520RX (full).jpg) Attachments ---------------- JD 9520RX (full).jpg (75KB - 104 downloads)

| Never been in a d or e series but a 755c is definitely louder than an 865c. Love the C18. | |||

Roseglen, North Dakota | A very thorough analysis. So thorough I don't think anyone could help you decide I would have to see that 9530T pull with that 865. That is one I've never heard We have an 865, have run 9630T and surely felt Deere had more creature comforts and steered nicer But the C-18 stands alone, nothing compares IMO

Southeast Washington | It is getting harder to find a good used C18 Cat engine tractor as everyone knows they are the real deal. The V12 Sisu is gone in a year or two with a whole new tractor to replace it. I don't think the 865C is too loud. We run ours at 1800-1900 rpm and isn't bad. Let it loose to the max rpm and it gets a lot noisier. It doesn't do much good to run on the back side of the HP and torque curve. Just more noise and burns more fuel. Love the grunt pulling hills. Maybe shift down a gear or two while our 620 quad maybe three or four gears. We have been through several reaction arm bearings over the years in the hills. Main thing is change oil often with the engine oil. SW. IOWA | I had a 945b wheeled tractor. Very well built tractor. Cab sucked. Dirty, noisey and dealer support was terrible. We have a cat dealer in town. If I could have a challenger chassis with a Deere cab and achi cab suspension I would be heaven

Very southern Mn | I guess we may have a dog 865e. We pull identical field cultivators , Challenger about .3 of a mile faster and pull same CIH ripper, Challenger maybe at most 1/2 mph faster. We had no intension of leasing Challenger but salesman came out with a lease 2 yrs ago that was cheaper than I could own the used 9560rt we were looking at. It was kind of quick deal and I didn’t even realize that Challenger had switched to the v12. Very disappointed. Lease was 4 yr hi risidual lease so we had no intention of buying tractor at the end of lease so we did it anyhow. I guess that’s why I asked about power because guys brag about the cat and this e sure doesn’t blow me away.

SE ND | If you go with a 9RT JD, purchase a 9510RT, same identical tractors just a software to limit the Horsepower and torque output. Then I would recommend custom tuning the 9510RT to meet or beat the horsepower and torque of the 9560RT. Save thousands by purchasing the smallest model in its series and uprating them safely to the biggest model. If you do have questions on custom ecu tuning, my email is good.

Southeast Washington | jdironman - 5/24/2019 19:27 Very impressive, those are hills. How many hrs on the 865? Many problems other than reaction arms? Only one set of reaction arm bearings. It had just over 900 rental hours on it when we bought it. It had slight traces of metal and got to about 2700 hours before replacement. It is now at 5800 hours and looking good so far. Most annoying issue is the hydraulic remote modules that go out every couple years. About $800 for the module just over $300 for labor and $275 for travel to program its address into the tractor and that is splitting the expense with another person. That is part is the reason we added a quad track to compare the two for down the road. Even the dealership isn't impressed with the V12 engines and really talking up the next series with major changes with the MAN engine and CVT. We all know the C18 is great and it would take a lot to remove it from our line up.

| We run a 865D and a 9570RT. This spring the cat dealer let us demo a 865E for a day. It was a little quieter than the 865D but not as quiet as the Deere. We didn't notice the E lacking power probably because we run the field cultivator pretty shallow in the spring. Our 865D has been a good tractor it has 2500 hrs and has had 1/4 the service calls of our 9570RT with 1500 hrs. If you are looking to plow tile the 865D would be a good choice because I have never drove another tractor with the low end grunt of the C18 not even close. | |||

Very southern Mn | How did your older 865 pull with the Deere? I ran both this last week and Cat more power than 9530t but not dramatic, not as much as specs would make you think. I bet everybody still prefers to drive Deere? Edited by jdironman 6/10/2019 08:32

| I can't tell much difference between the 9570 Deere and 865D peak HP wise. The cat definitely has more on the bottom rpms. The Deere is more plush/quieter to drive for sure but you also have def to deal with then. Edited by RRVND 6/10/2019 10:28 | |||
