Yes, they'll come after you. If you don't respond to a summons for jury duty, it's just a little thing called contempt of court! If your buddy keeps pulling that stunt, it WILL catch up with him sooner or later. There are definitely penalties involved with a contempt of court citation. As Bob said, you really don't want to tease the bull.

My wife and I have both been called to serve before. Many times the jury pool for a case is dismissed before it even gets to trial, because there is an out of court settlement, or a plea bargain. That has happened to us both. Or, as others have mentioned, if you get questioned as a prospective juror, you can claim bias or hardship, and usually get dismissed. Jury time is usually paid, at least here in IA, and it's minor compared to what one's time is worth, but it's one of the responsibilities that comes with being an American citizen.

But, you can bet your sweet bippy that if you got a jury summons, your name is on a list, and if you fail to show up for selection from the jury pool, you WILL be missed. You can hate it as much as you want, but you don't want to ignore it. Like I said, it'll catch up to your buddy eventually if he keeps it up. Some people don't have the sense God gave a goose.

Or, maybe you'd rather live under a Communist/Socialist/totalitarian government where the courts are a joke, and you don't have to worry about being judged by a jury of your peers. This country may be on the downward slide toward that reality anyway.

But, hey, that's just me. Do what you want. But if you ignore it, better make sure you've got bail money handy.

My .02.
