More than likely something is wrong with the cylinder. I had a shaft that was bent so I put a new cylinder on last year and didn't do anything different.
Regarding the aluminum end caps...I had a couple end caps that were worn a few years ago and a local machinist built me 4 new ones in his CNC mill. He saved the program so he should still be able to make new end caps if you or anyone else needs some.
