Thumb of Michigan | We grow seed soys for an out of state company. I'm not up on all the rules anymore, but long story short, any state that grows dry edible beans for seed (used) to have a 3 class seed system. Far as I know, all the others had 4 classes. May still be that way? Michigan still has a 3 class system. 3 vs 4 class makes a difference on the whole shebang in the big picture.
About 1/2 of our soy production is seed. If I had more of the correct bins, all our soy production would be seed. Theres some extra money to be made, but its not "free" cash. As others mentioned, you can't be sloppy.
Every company has a different contract for seed production. We've been happy with ours, have been with the company over 25 years. The biggest premium for us is the splits premium, and the pricing is based on markets south of me. We have obsenely fat basis "here" for much of the year, just avoiding that can be even better than the split premium.
