N FLA | I always just bought on price and quality. Low price and low quality. At that time value of gain was very high, like 80 cents per pound or more. And the reward far outweighed the risk. It's more like 45 to 50 now and I can't really justify the feed and death loss and babysitting.
Lately I just try to buy thin bred cows at the thin open cow price, and stick with black and big frame if possible. I was trying to buy 60 per season, and more like 6 to 12 per season now. So it's alot different on my part. I don't have any mud here, that's one really big factor I think mud and cold would just kill these type in a hurry. But if you saw what people graze here, these are just survivors for the most part. Old, but poorly managed also. | |
