The early D's had a hollow shaft that ran through center of transmission that would fail, split tractor and update to a bigger shaft.
In our area they sold several D series to dairies and regretted it, started pushing M series instead, the D wouldn't hold up. I always thought if taken care of and not abused a D would be fine.
