Start unrolling old cheap bales of hay. I had a friend that did bentonite in coarse soil and it failed. The tank was dry and he had 50 or 60 3 year old bales in a stack. Older hay is better but rolling it out makes it plug the hole faster.


Neighbor did something similar a few yrs back. Had a pond completely full and in 3 days was bone dry. He feed round bales in the dried up pond over the winter. Next spring it filled up and has been good ever since.
