NW Ohio | Focus on 10-15 Hd at a time. Forget about buying one big group of calves to put on feed. Go to the sales and do your best to buy 10-15 Hd of one class of undervalued cattle that will make $200-$300. It may take 2-3 sales to get those calves put together depending on how big of a run your local market has. Get your group of 10-15 started, add the value to them, and either resell as started feeders if you can make $50-$100/Hd in 45-60 days or keep them to finish if you can hit that $200-$300 range. You can have multiple small groups going at one time. You won’t find thousands of head that will make that margin but you can find a small gooseneck load at any major sale. This will provide cash flow and teach a lot of lessons. Get your pens set to handle small groups and finish them yourself. After you get that down you can move into the commodity cattle market and feedback volume if you want. Do a good job taking care of the cattle, if your selling feeders represent them accurately, and find the best places to market your fats. | |
