We start to mouth cows at preg check time when they are 8-10 years of age. I will mouth a cow every year after 8 years to check for brokens or gummers. I will pull gummers and take home to be sold as bred gummers if market is up, or maybe keep for one more year to run in my Forest Service fields. Then they will be sold after weaning a calf off them one last time. I've had some cows last 16 years if fed hay in winter. But cows grazing out year round in our country lose teeth around 10 years old. First calf heifers get second chance if not bred. They are kept open till next breeding season. After that any opens are sold at preg check time. In drought years sometimes 10% of first calvers come home open. I would rather chance them again as start or buy outside cattle. We try and raise all our own replacements. Also any bad eyes or udders see are culled in fall as well.
