I think most of the ones on HGTV aren't accurate. My BS meter pegs about a couple minutes in on most of them. More accurate to see first time buyers looking at sub $200K homes, those $500K+ either they got lucky with good jobs or someone's daddy is ponying up a lot of money.
The ones with various ones flipping a house for sale (picking up a foreclosed home, renovating, then selling) it would be possible to run into issues with those, especially if you can't go inside and look it through first. Might be a reason it got foreclosed on, and many of those previous owners didn't give a shart after some point. Looked at a couple places several years ago when my wife and I were planning on buying a house, seen one where the previous owner got foreclosed on and yanked out the kitchen sink. Guess they put that in and weren't going to give it up! Holes in walls weren't uncommon either.
There was a Holmes on homes or something like that was produced in Canada some years back, that guy was fixing up problems the home buyer found after they moved in, that seemed legit as well. Some areas have problems with builders or others coming in and building a new home or doing a renovation for someone but somehow avoiding code violations or skimping on work done, just to end up making a huge problem down the road.
