I think you're right. When we moved to Mpls many years ago we looked at a lot of houses, most of them had a major issue that we didn't want to deal with. Finally saw an ad for a house that looked promising and went to look at it. My brother looked at it first with our Mom, then I went with her to look at it again and we agreed it was the right house for her. At the closing, the realtor came up to us and said, "I have to ask, what were you guys looking for when each of you went downstairs and then upstairs and you met to talk it over?" We explained that in the basement we could see that the floor joists, electrical, and plumbing was all in remarkable shape, it looked like nothing had been changed since the house was built, and by looking at the underside of the roof and the inside of the upstairs windows we could see that the building's exterior didn't have any sign of leaks that could have caused damage. Add to that it had very nice woodwork and a good layout of the rooms made the house stand out compared to all the other houses we had looked at. If you've ever worked on houses you notice all those little things that never seem quite right when things get remodeled. Its just like when a car collision expert looks at a car from 20' away and can tell immediately that the paint and the sheetmetal doesn't seem right.
