N MO | I’m running all fall calving cows on straight fescue. Generally fescue does not effect them as much as they are not trying to milk, breed back, and exist during the heat of summer on fescue pasture. They just get fat and lazy. We struggled with retaining 80-85% bred in spring calving herd but those same genetics are giving us 95-97% conception rates in the fall herd.
Any good quality mineral works well but would recommend an IGR with at least the 5600gram CTC level to help out with pinkeye, flies, and foot rot. I have been getting along really good with running a 16:8 chelated mineral year around. Seems feet are hardier and will have the tighest calving group ever next fall. | |
