the 'if you have something younger and tighter' comments. That old cow probably had a hell of a nice bag her 1st 5 calves all heifers and put back into his herd. What point in their life can you tell a cows udder will turn out like this? Where can you find a 'tight-uddered bull' to AI to? Would like to see pictures of everyone's cows the day they calve and get a percentage of cows that have a bag like this or worse. To original poster, the teats are small as cow is probably just getting broke in on most operations truth be told. Red cow in picture is candidate for replacement and even she had a nice bag her 1st eleven calves.
What's real interesting to me is that both the black cow and the red cow - - - well -- - neither had suspensory mammary ligament breakdown!
The black cow, to me, looked like a higher milk producing cow so a young calf just doesn't get to sucking the back half for maybe even the first 3 weeks.
Would have been more useful to also have a pic of that black cow just before she calved but, imo at least , I wouldn't even be afraid of keeping her daughters.
She's just I heavy milk producer - - - in fact - - - I'm willing to say that she likely has one of the biggest calves in the herd come weaning time unless the little guy is too busy playing bull to eat properly - - - then he'll just do ok.
The red cow on the other hand - - - well I lost a calf last spring because the little turkey just couldn't get the teats into his mouth when the milk production hit.
Calf sucked a few times (I saw twice and evidence of more) but momma tucked it into the bush and it was dead before it was a week old.
Her bag - - - well I knew I was gambling the fall before - - - a huge washtub and far bigger than the pickle teats in the other pic - - - so I lost - - - big time.
Her calves were always the biggest in the bunch though - - - that's why I thought it might be worth the gamble (I know I'm crazy - - - it helps most days - - - grin!). |
